Aftercare

Getting the most from your new dental implants

Dental implants are made from artificial materials and hence cannot decay, however, good oral care is still essential. Without this, their longevity and security may be undermined.

At 186 Park Road Dental Practice, our implant dentists have years of experience in placing dental implants, and you can rest assured that you will be in excellent hands. With good care and continued guidance, your dental implants should last for many years.

To give you additional confidence we offer a 10 year implant guarantee so you can be safe in the knowledge that your implant investment is a wise one.

Aftercare

In the immediate period following your implant placement, you will be given full instructions regarding aftercare, including how to keep your mouth nice and clean immediately following the procedure. Your diet will also be discussed, including the need to eat soft foods, gradually building to harder foods, as well as your lifestyle habits, such as smoking and alcohol consumption.

The main threat to dental implants is without a doubt, gum disease. It is very easy for patients to think that, as the tooth is artificial, cleaning is no longer necessary, but nothing could be further from the truth.

A successful dental implant relies almost entirely on the security of the titanium root in the bone. Under normal circumstances, there should be few problems, but, if gum disease is allowed to take hold and progress this can become a very serious issue.

Gum disease

Whilst gum disease can be relatively mild in its early stages; once it evolves into peri-implantitis, the bone in the jaw which holds the implant in place may come under attack. A weakening or thinning of the bone in this area means that the titanium root may become loose or even fall out, threatening the survival of the implant.

Fortunately, it is relatively easy to prevent this from happening. Regular brushing and interdental cleaning of your teeth, including the area around the implant, is essential. You should also ensure that you have your teeth professionally checked at the recommended intervals so that our Crouch End dental team can monitor your oral health.
