What Are Dental Implants
Dental implants are considered by many to be the ‘gold standard’ of teeth replacement methods and here at 186 Park Road Dental Practice, we’ve placed many thousands of implants safely and successfully.
Losing a tooth can have a significant negative effect on both a person’s appearance and also the functionality of their teeth. Especially where the lost tooth is visible, most people will seek to replace it by artificial means, traditionally using dentures or a bridge.
Increasingly though, people are turning to dental implants to replace their missing tooth or teeth. This is a well-established and trusted method which is now widely acknowledged as offering the most comfort and security when it comes to replacing lost teeth.
What is a dental implant?
The actual implant is a screw like object which is made from titanium. This is the only metal currently known to bond with the natural bone 100% effectively; an essential part of the procedure. In effect, once placed and integrated with the jawbone, an implant acts as an artificial tooth root, onto which a replacement tooth can be attached.
To place a dental implant, first of all, scans and x-rays are taken to determine the correct position. This not only ensures the correct position relative to the remaining natural teeth but also ensures that any nearby nerves are avoided.
Using the results of the scans and x-rays, a hole is drilled into the jawbone and the dental implant placed into this. Whilst this may sound painful, there is no need to worry as the skills of our experienced implant dentist, together with the latest equipment and powerful anaesthetics will ensure that any discomfort is minimised.
Once the implant has been placed, it is then left for a period of time; usually about three months, during which time a process known as osseointegration occurs. This is the process which bonds the implant and the bone, providing an extremely strong anchor.
After this, an abutment is added, onto which a dental crown is finally attached, completing the replacement tooth.
Benefits of dental implants
There are a number of significant benefits to dental implants as follows:
- They allow patients to eat any food that they wish as they are strong and secure
- They look and feel very natural
- They are long lasting, with many lasting for over twenty years
- They prevent bone loss in the jaw which occurs when a tooth is lost
- They require no special aftercare other than the regular brushing and interdental cleaning, along with the usual six monthly checks at our Crouch End practice
- Speech is not affected as can sometimes be the case with dentures
- They can be used to replace an individual tooth or even a full arch of teeth in a procedure known as ‘All on 4’ or ‘Same Day Teeth’.

The types of dental implants we use
When having a dental implant placed, it is important that only top quality implants are used. Cutting corners on cheaper implants means that they may not bond as well with the bone, possibly causing an unstable implant that may result in total failure in time.
A top quality implant ensures both comfort and the maximum possible degree of strength and security. At 186 Park Road Dental Practice, we use one of the four types of implants below.
Bio-Horizon dental implants have been developed through years of in-depth research and have been shown to have a 99.2% success rate.
In addition to this, the implant itself has a lifetime warranty.
Osstem, have, over the years, developed a variety of dental implant systems which provide a very high level of quality and excellent aesthetic results. The use of an ‘SA’ surface treatment also helps to encourage a faster healing time. The company invests heavily in research and development and is continually seeking to improve its products to an even higher standard than they currently are.
